The Jenks Fire Department is in the process of upgrading EMS services from First Responder to EMT Basic and EMT Intermediate. The Jenks Firefighters are currently enrolled in an EMT Basic Class with a few Firefighters enrolled in EMT Intermediate. EMT Intermediate class started in October and is slated to be completed in December. The EMT Basic course started in September and will also be completed in December. Along with the EMT Classes, firefighters have also been certified to be CPR and Basic Life Support Instructors with the American Heart Association. Firefighter/EMT Kyle Flora is currently in an EMT Instructor course. In 2009 there will be several more advances in training for Firefighters, including another possible EMT Intermediate class.
Chief Gary Friedel has recently added Jake Rhoades as his new Assistant Chief. Chief Rhoades comes to Jenks from Stillwater Fire Department where he was the Training Officer for the entire Department with national recognition for his work. The Jenks Firefighters welcome the addition of Assistant Chief Rhoades and are excited about the future and the continuing plans to improve our department.
Letters of Commendations from Fire Chief Friedel and Assistant Fire Chief Rhoades were presented to Captain Kirk Morris, Captain Paul Jenkins, Driver Keith Gillette, and Firefighter Matt Johnson for their actions on October 28th 2008.
At approximately 7:40 a.m. Engine 1 and Engine 3 were dispatched to a motor vehicle accident on Elwood north of 101st. Upon arrival both engine companies encountered a two car collision with one of the vehicles on its side. As a result of this accident there were a total of seven patients, five of which, had been ejected from their vehicles. A mass casualty, incident, such as this, requires many tasks to be completed simultaneously and therefore must be handled by quick decisions and actions. Survey of the scene, establishing command, extrication of the patients, triage and treatment of the patients as well as other important duties were required of these men. Due to excellent decision making and performance both crews are recognized for the efforts that day.
The Jenks Fire Department was recently awarded a $20,000 dollar grant for Swift Water Rescue from Senator Nancy Riley. The money will be used for training and equipment for the department. On hand for the presenatation was Senior Captain Steve Garrison, Mayor Vic Vreeland, Senator Nancy Riley, Fire Chief Gary Friedel, and Firefighter Albert Isaacson.
Nick Morgans and Albert Isaacson were recently promoted from Firefighter to Driver. Nick and Albert particpated in the Driver Test that was conducted on October 28th and 29th. The Driver Test included a written test on the 28th and a Driving Course and Pumping Practicals on the 29th.
The Jenks Fire Department recently participated in a Pre-Prom Alcohol Awareness Demonstration at Jenks High School to show the realities of drinking and driving. Jenks firefighters along with Jenks Police, EMSA, Life Flight, and a local funeral home were apart of the Demonstration.
